Looking For A Laptop Hard Drive?

We get a lot of calls and email about selecting the best disk drive for your notebook computer. Here are some general rules to follow.

All notebooks manufactured in the last seven years use IDE disk drives. SCSI notebook drives have not been manufactured for at least seven years. Very few notebooks were ever manufactured that use SCSI drives.

All IDE notebooks require a drive with a 44 pin interface. Some notebook drives appear to have more or less than 44 pins. Take a very close look and you will see that there is a removable adapter on the back of the drive. This adapter converts the drive from 44 pins to something else. The adapter will fit on your new drive.

All IDE notebooks accept a drive that is 70mm wide X 100mm deep. A drive that is 9.5mm high will fit in any notebook. Some drives are larger than 9.5mm (12mm, 14mm, 17mm and 19mm). These taller drives may not work with some of the newer slim notebooks. To be certain that these taller drives will work with your machine measure the drive that you are replacing. A smaller 8.5mm drive will be available soon. We are not aware of any notebook that require an 8.5mm drive yet.
